Unbridled Beauty, Celebrating the Spirit of Horses

Unbridled Beauty, Celebrating the Spirit of Horses

The minute I walked into the Cracker Barrel , this book caught my eye. I love paintings by artist, Chris Cummings and I love to read quotes of inspiration. What a great combination!  Here are a few of my favorite quotes. No hour of life is wasted that is spent in the saddle. “Winston Churchill”, Closeness, friendship, affection-keeping your own horse means all these things. “Bertrand Leclair” and A lovely horse is always an experience. It is an emotional experience of the kind that is spoiled by words. “Beryl Markham”.

Tuesday was a great day to visit Dutch Wonderland in Lancaster, PA.. This is a great park for younger children who can’t ride all those big coasters and crazy rides and the lines aren’t to long. Each year the park tries to add one new attraction. It’s been a few years since I have visited the park and a water park has been added. Unfortunately, I found that children were not well supervised and to be honest, some were just plain rude. The water slides are great but, the lines were extremely long so we stayed on the other side of the park. Our favorite ride is the water flume. Amomg rides we were able to get on were the carousel, giant slide, a spinning turtle ride, roller coaster and antique car ride, just to name a few. In spite of the fact that I had a migrain and Leon (Tracy’s boyfriend) had a toothach, we were able to still have a good time and enjoy dinner at Fudruckers.  For great horse toys, figures, picture frames, embroidered handbags and towel sets shop Country Time Creations, a horse lovers store! Savannah & Pheonix, An Adorable Pair!

Friday, August 21st, 2009
Savannah loves to visit with the children.

Savannah loves to visit with the children.

Savannah & Pheonix were immediate friends.
Savannah & Pheonix, love at first sight!

Yesterday the girls of Country Time 4-H threw a party for Delainey Parsons and granted her wish to ride a horse. Delainey’s adorable little sister, Pheonix came to join the party. She  wanted so badly to ride a horse so we took her into meet Savannah.  It was love at first sight as I saw Pheonix plant a gentle kiss on Savannah’s muzzle. Two year old Pheonix,  having survived cleft palate surgery has over come many obstacles in her young life. She is cute as a button and full of energy. She will be returning in the near future to do a photo shoot with Savannah and perhaps she too, will get to ride a horse.

Savannah, Growing Up Fast!

Sunday, August 2nd, 2009

Makhi enjoys taking Savannah for a walk.

Time is passing quickly and my little Savannah, is growing up fast! Last week she shed all of her baby fur. It literally came out by the handful and within a few days she  had a nice new coat.  She will continue on Foal-lac until she is 6 months old and for now her training will be perfecting the things she has already learned. She has been moved to a larger pen and now is socializing with Cheyenne and Gypsy. I am hopeful that within a few weeks she can stay in the same stall as the other two mini’s.  So far, Gypsy has been  the only horse who has been aggressive toward Savannah. I am sure she is just marking her spot in the herd. Now that Savannah is a little older she can begin joining the herd one horse at a time.

We give our children roots and wings. Jowana with Makhi and Gypsy.

Once upon a time the horse was seen as an object to own. Their beauty and spirit made man want to catch him and tame him. The only way they could do that was to break him and force him to do what he demanded.   In doing so, he broke the horses spirit  and made him nothing more than a creature to be controlled and used. When he no longer served his purpose he  was sold or disguarded like yesterdays trash.

Over the years the image of the horse has changed. People like Ray Hunt, Pat Parelli and Buck Brannaman have changed the way we see and treat the horse. He is no longer something to be owned and controlled but a partner who once he has gained your trust will reward you with respect and leadership. More and more we see equine assisted therapies. The horse is used to help those mentally and physically challenged. They are even using miniature horses for seeing eye animals. Finally, we are starting to see all that these beautiful animals have to offer.

The Root Farm located in Verona, New York is one of those places. The facility offers hippotherapy, adaptive vaulting, a vaulting club, driving, day rehab and equimuse ( a type of music therapy). My daughter, Jenna has had the good fortune to attend several events at the Root Farm and work closely with their  staff. Last year they did a beautiful equine production called “Angels for Children”. Jenna was one of the performers. I didn’t get to attend but, after seeing the photo gallery I was quite impressed and inspired.  This played a positive role in my production “Le Cirque of Horses”. I was disappointed to see that the production will not take place this year. It is not often we get to see the horse in a setting such as this, one that is of such beauty and entertaining. It truely is magical.

There are two lasting bequests we can give our children. One is roots, the other is wings. Visit the Root Farm. For great horse apparel, picture frames, jewelry, handbags, toys, music and more, visit Country Time Crerations, for a schedule see the side bar Pages/Events. See more of Jenna’s Never Ending Road Trip.  Did you visit?  Leave a comment!

This week was my last performance for the summer and I got to entertain the kids from Camp Lenape. Camp Lenape is located in Frederica, Delaware and is a camp for children with Cerebral Palsy. It was a beautiful day and it all started with a hay ride from the camp to Heartland Equestrian Center. My 4-H kids were excited and a bit nervous as they prepared to do the opening number with a hoop routine. Sundae and Cheyenne wowed the crowd with their jumps, spins and tricks. The audience was amazed at all the things Sundae did. All was done at liberty (no ropes). The campers enjoyed the performance and hope to see the horses again.  Each camper received their own horse as a reminder of the day.

Peanut Butter Blossoms are always a hit with the kids.

The kids of Country Time 4-H were very busy this week with fun activities. One of those activities was making peanut butter blossom cookies. here is the recipe they used:

Hershey Kisses candy, 1/2 cup shortening, 3/4 cup peanut butter, 1/3 cup sugar, 1/3 cup light brown sugar, 1 egg, 2 tbs. milk, 1 tsp vanilla extract, 1 and 1/2 cups  all purpose flour, 1 tsp. baking soda and 1/2 tsp salt.

Preheat oven to 375. Beat shortening, peanut butter, sugar and brown sugar in bowl. Add egg, milk and vanilla, beat well. Stir in flour, baking powder and salt. Shape into 1 inch balls, roll in sugar, place onto ungreased cookie sheet and bake 8-10 minutes. Remove from oven and immediately place a candy kiss in the center. Cookie will crack around edges. Cool 5 minutes then remove from cookie sheet to finish cooling. Makes about 2 dozen cookies.

Russum Receives Scholarship

Samantha Russum receives scholarship.

Samantha Russum receives scholarship.

Samantha Russum, a 2009  graduate of  Lake Forset High School was the winner of a $500.00 scholarship award given by the First State Corvette Club. It was really great to be able to give this to her, I use to babysit Samantha when she was just a toddler. She will be attending Wesley College, in Dover, Delaware where she plans to study special education.  Pictured:  left to right: Jowana Lamb, Samantha Russum, Marianne Callahan and Darlene Hurley.

Here is the speech I prepared for her awards presentation:  Life, a circle that begins at birth and ends with death. But, within that circle there are many phases to pass and many paths to travel. Until now, many of those paths have been guided by your parents. As you begin your travels as a young adult remember that true success comes to those who can balance work as well as pleasure. Our Club had 32 applications for our scholarship. Each applicant had outstanding academics, were superior athletes and dedicated volunteers. Therefore, the weight of our slection was on the essay. Our scholar posses strong family values, realistic goals, a passion for her career choice and has a big heart. On behalf of the members of the First state Corvette Club we proudly present this $500.00 scholarship award to Samantha Russum.

We wish Samantha lots of luck and a successful and happy future.

Chincoteague Pony Swim

Ponies are auctioned to thin the herd.

Ponies are auctioned to thin the herd.

It was a small town event that gained fame with the story “Misty of Chincoteague”. Now between 40 and 50 thousand visitors flock to this small island to enjoy a tradition that started  back in 1925.  The horses are hereded by salt water cowboys and take a 3 minute swim across the Assateague Channel during “slack calm”, so younger ponies can make the swim. Most visitors won’t see the actual swim as it is blocked by boats with camera crews galore. You can however,  get very close to the ponies when they are paraded down the street to the local fire company. The  fire company holds a carnival and ponies are auctioned to thin the herd. Only 150 ponies are allowed by federal permit for grazing land in the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge on Assateague. Proceeds benefit the fire company and approximately 80 foals are sold each year. This year equine extremist, Tommie Turvey will attend the event and will work with some of the ponies. The auction can make as much as $150,000 dollars. This year’s pony swim is July 29, 09. If you have never attended the pony swim, it truely is spectacular!
