Words of Inspiration: Safety & Comfort

Friday, October 21st, 2011

I am always amazed with the speed of technology but,  I just love Facebook!  Not only is it  great for social networking but, the photo’s and  information we can get by “sharing” is priceless.  I would like to share some of these images with my readers.  With the economy the way it is more and more people find it difficult to feed  and care for their animals. My animals are like my children so, I could never imagine having to give them away because I couldn’t feed them or had no home for them. I think that all creatures take comfort in feeling safe. It doesn’t matter what life throws at you,  things just seem to feel better in the arms of the one you love or who loves you.  This is one of the most touching photo’s I have ever seen. Here we have a man who is homeless and wants nothing for himself but, wants food for his puppies. Those puppies feel safe and find comfort in the arms of this man.  It is a shame that we live in one of richest countries in the world and yet we have people living on the streets. Bless this man and his puppies. I hope they find compassion from their fellow neighbors and may their be plenty of food and shelter for them. May we all be inspired by this photo.

This photo can be found on Facebook: I’m a stray. I’m worth loving. Owner of the photo is unknown. If the owner of this photo wants it removed or a credit for sharing please contact Jowana Lamb.

The Greeting Card

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

Handmade gifts are always special.

Ok, I hear this every Christmas, I’m not giving out cards this year. Once I buy the stamps and the cards it’s just  too expensive. Here is my thought on this. First of all, I know that Christmas comes every year . You are probably going to get one card from me this year and Christmas will be it. I purchase my cards after Christmas or when they are on sale. I  purchase my special horse cards in October. Then I start buying stamps as soon as the Christmas ones are available. This year I got a call from my friend, Carol Deas telling me what a beautiful card she had received from me. Nothing makes your day like going to the mailbox and getting those cards. Forget the e-cards, sure you can send them all with the click of a button but, oh, how impersonal!  During Christmas mine are strung across the livingroom wall. Those cards are as much a part of my holiday tradition as the Christmas tree. So, prepare for next year, I hear the cost of stamps aren’t going up. For the cost of about a dollar or a little bit more you can send a greeting that will warm the entire household and tell everyone just how much you care.

Unbridled Beauty, Celebrating the Spirit of Horses

Unbridled Beauty, Celebrating the Spirit of Horses

The minute I walked into the Cracker Barrel , this book caught my eye. I love paintings by artist, Chris Cummings and I love to read quotes of inspiration. What a great combination!  Here are a few of my favorite quotes. No hour of life is wasted that is spent in the saddle. “Winston Churchill”, Closeness, friendship, affection-keeping your own horse means all these things. “Bertrand Leclair” and A lovely horse is always an experience. It is an emotional experience of the kind that is spoiled by words. “Beryl Markham”.

Jenna and Bubba share a special moment.

Jenna and Bubba share a special moment.

The sight of him did something to me I’ve never quite been able to explain. He was more than tremendous strength and speed and beauty of motion. He set me dreaming. ” Walt Morey”. Read this and other beautiful quotes in the book  “Unbridled Beauty,  Celebrating the Spirit of Horses” with paintings by equestrian artist, Chris Cummings.

Bubba was the horse my daughter, Jenna learned to vault on. He was a gentle giant measuring 18 hands high and weighing over 2,000 pounds. He was patient, forgiving of her  mistakes and proudly carried her and her team mates during competitions and at exhibitions. This is my favorite picture of Jenna and Bubba, it shows the special bond they had for each other.Follow Jenna on her Never Ending Road Trip.

Prince’s Garden

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009
Prince, my faithful companion.

Prince, my faithful companion.

I still remember the look on Jenna’s face when she got off the school bus and saw Tracy and I sitting on the front porch holding a cute little puppy. Terry, was gone a lot and I thought that with us living in the country, a guard dog might be a good idea.  Prince was adopted from the local S.P.C.A. and was just a few months old. He was a Shephard/Husky mix and grew to be about 90 pounds. He was a gentle playmate and a fearless protector. When the girls grew older, Prince became my trusty companion. Often, his face was the first to greet me as I started my day. He watched over me as I cleaned the barn and was a huge help when I weeded the garden, or so he thought! He loved to chase bunny rabbits. As he got older, it was hard for him to get around, those rabbits loved to tease him. The day he passed was one of the hardest days of my life.  The mornings were the hardest. When I would walk out the back door to head for the barn I would look for him, only now he wasn’t there. When  I saw this statue at a roadside stand I had to have it. I planted his garden. It brought me comfort knowing that when I looked for him, I knew he was in the garden. A few weeks after planting the garden I noticed bunny rabbits gathering around the garden in the evening.  They didn’t go in the garden but, were hopping all around eating grass. This went on for months. Even when there was snow on the ground, the rabbits were there.  I knew they were telling me not to worry, Prince was in heaven chasing bunny rabbits. Prince, was a part of our family for 14 years. His statue has grown faded and cracked but, my memories of that wonderful dog are still  as colorful as the flowers in his garden.

Book Review: The Quotable Equine

The Quotable Equine by: Jim Dratfield

The Quotable Equine by: Jim Dratfield

While attending the Devon Horse Show I  had the pleasure of meeting photographer/ author, Jim Dratfield. Jim is  a talented photographer who has traveled extensively  photographing many famous and not so famous people and their pets. He has taken many of these photo’s and included them into books for inspiration as well as fun. “The Quotable Equine” is the perfect book for me as I love beautiful pictures of horses and enjoy reading quotes, they can put a lot of meaning into just a few little words. It’s amazing!  Jim even took the time to autograph my book.My three favorite quotes from the book are:

A  lovely horse is always an experience… It is an emotional experience of the kind that is spoiled by words. ** Beryl Markham

You were once wild here. Don’t let them tame you! ** Isadora Duncan

Greatness lies not in being strong, but in the right use of strength.                       ** Henry Ward Beecher

Take Time to Enjoy the View!

Friday, April 17th, 2009
Nature has much to offer, if we can find the time to visit.

Nature has much to offer, if we can find the time to visit.

Take time to enjoy the view, but at a safe distance.

Take time to enjoy the view, but at a safe distance.

During our recent trip to Tennessee, Terry and I traveled to several state parks. It was during that trip we remembered why we bought a motorhome in the first place.  With all the hustle and bustle of life, along with the high cost of gas we saw our motorhome spending more and more time sitting in the yard. We didn’t buy it so we could zoom from here to there down the inter-state but, to travel the road less traveled. To see how other  people lived. To enjoy the daffodils blooming on the roadside and the leaves changing in the fall.  To see deer feeding in the meadow, new born foals nursing with their mother and baby calves running  on the hillside. We even had to stop because there was a cow in the road, you can’t get any more country than that! Take time to enjoy just sitting on the porch of an old country store while eating ice cream or talking with a waitress in  a roadside  diner.   Take time to enjoy the beauty and miracles that nature has to offer.  I have to wonder sometimes if what we are missing is worth all the material things we spend all of our time working to pay for?  We only have one lifetime, the most valuable things are truely priceless.

Book Review: If I Had A Horse, How Different Life Would Be

If I Had A Horse: How Different Life Would Be

If I Had A Horse: How Different Life Would Be

If you enjoy beautiful books, breath taking photography and words of inspiration then this is the book for you. If I had A Horse, How Different Life Would Be, written by Melissa Sovey-Nelson and photographs by Mark J. Barrett capture the true spirit of the horse through photographs and beautiful  language that will inspire your outlook on life. It is a collection of phrases as well as stories by Sovey-Nelson. My favorite paragraph goes like this: Confidence starts in the mind, blossoms in action, and grows with practice. Truer words were never spoken. It is my dream to one day write a book like this. This is definitely one to add to your collection!

Courage, wisdom born of insight and humility, empathy born of compassion and love, all can be bequeathed by a horse to his rider. (Charles de Kunffy)

When I can’t ride anymore, I shall keep horses as long as I can hobble along with a bucket and wheelbarrel. When I can’t hobble, I shall roll my wheelchair out by the fence of the field where my horses graze, and watch them. (Monica Dickens)

Believe by Buck Brannaman cont..

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009
Words of inspiration from Buck Brannaman.

Words of inspiration from Buck Brannaman.

I have more words of wisdom from the book “Believe” by Buck Brannaman. I hope you enjoy them. If people put more thought into their words and their actions, the world might truely be a better place.

“I believe that kindness and patience and faith are more powerful than negativity.”  “People really do remember how you make them feel. And that’s something that a lot of folks don’t put much effort into these days.” ” To a horse what does matter is how you make them feel, and they respond positively if you treat them with respect, patience and understanding.” ” We all learn best if taught with patience, humility and understanding.” ” Yeilding is not about submission, it’s a matter of showing respect for one another.” “Fear can undermine everything you do, it’s foolish to be impatient, it’s cruel to withhold affection and respect.” “What works in disciplining a horse also works in self descipline.” “If you really listen to your horse, he will tell you what’s wrong.” “Life is a path, a journey, a never ending circle. The circle of learning is knowing what you want to accomplish and how your going to get there, your direction and your path.” ” There is more grace in life being imperfect than struggling to hide the fact that you aren’t.”

Hope this gives you something to think about and to inspire you. “Believe” is a fantastic book. Learn more about Buck at http://www.brannaman.com.
