The rescue dog & I stand in front of my corvette.

It was a hot day for the Wine & Wheels Car Show but, many turned out for a good cause. The event was held at the beautiful Pizzadili Winery in Felton, Delaware.  Lots of beautiful cars, wine tasting, vendors and good fun will make for a profitable event for  the Debra L. Sipple Memorail, Inc (Debbie’s Fund). Each year this organization holds numerous events and raise thousands of dollars  for animals in need. Some of these organizations include Candles for Cats & Canines, KCSPCA’s Trigger Fund, Purr-fect Haven Cat Rescue, Whimsical Animal Rescue and Dalmation Rescue of Delaware. I took a moment to pose with their mascot the rescue dog.  Learn more about the Debra L. Sipple Memorial, Inc. and all the great work they are doing!

It’s hard to believe but, it’s been 10 years since I attended the Ludwig’s Corner Horse Show and Country Fair. My daughters, Jenna and Tracy did a vaulting demo and it was a really nice show.  The 3 day show takes place over Labor day weekend, September 5,6, and 7, 09 and  attracts about 500 competitors. As well as competition there is a car show, carriage exhibition, game demonstration and entertainment. This year’s entertainment includes the Chincoteague trick ponies by trainer Kyley DiLuigi. They even paint pictures! The Thorncroft Mainstreamers will do a skills demo and the Pickering Hunt Pony Club Team will do a games demo. Laurie Warren of Kay's Kamp (in pink) with Tracy Solloway, Jowana Lamb and Bruce Ballard.

This week I met Laurie Warren of Kay’s Kamp. This is the first oncology camp in Delaware and will be held August 8-15  at the St. Joseph’s Center in Clayton. The camp is offered free of charge to any child 6-16 who is under going cancer treatment or is in remission. Laurie and her husband lost their daughter, Kaylyn to Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in 2007. Kay’s Kamp is her dream so that other children fighting cancer will have a place to go, to not be labeled sick or different and regain their childhood. As the public relations officer for the First State Corvette Club I was present when she was presented  with a check for $100.00 for her camp. I am hoping that next year they can have live animals and she will consider having a visit from Savannah. Best of luck on this years camp! Learn more at   The Kaylyn Elaine Warren Foundation.

“Le Cirque of Horses” Growing as an Artist

Monday, May 25th, 2009
Cheyenne jumps through the hoop.

Cheyenne jumps through the hoop.

It was the end of a long day.  After months of planning and rehearsing, in less than two hours our production was over. Excited children carried souvenir horses and coloring books or munched on hot dogs and chips while their mother’s shopped the silent auction for bargains. Colorful costumes, lively music and beautiful horses filled the night in the circus themed production “Le Cirque of Horses”.
More than 100 spectators were entertained by a variety of performers including the Heartland Equestrian Center’s Little Hoofer’s Savvy Team, Sliver Steppers Drill Team, Rachel Lamb and Graeleigh Lacky, Clowning Around 4-H and my Amazing Paints.
For many years visions of dancing horses filled my head. I had studied natural horsemanship for 10 years and was ready to grow as an artist. I was most inspired by the music of “Cirque Du Seleil” and my daughter, Jenna who is a circus artist. The production would not have been possible without the help of good friend, Bonnie Keller and the support of my husband, Terry and daughter, Tracy. Over the past few years, Bonnie has given me many opportunities to perform with my horses. My family is my right and my left hand.
The night began with a rhythmic routine. It was what I was most nervous about, having never performed before an audience. The routine uses a dance ribbon, poi and hoops. Opening to Brittany Spears “Circus”, with flashes of color and amazing tricks the routine set the tone for the evening. The Little Hoofer’s Savvy Team demonstrated their skills using miniature horses and various obstacles. Their routine to “Singing in the Rain” using umbrellas for props  is a favorite.  Rachel Lamb and Graeleigh Lacky were perfectly timed in their “English verses Western” jumping demonstration. Let’s not forget the clowns! Clowning Around 4-H is a group of kids who love to have fun. The Silver Steppers Drill Team is always up for something fun too. Their colorful costumes and painted horses were a hit with the crowd.
When working with horses one is to always expect the unexpected. Tonight was no exception as my horses seem to have ideas of their own and more energy than expected.  Cheyenne, my three year old miniature is quite the entertainer, looking much like the energizer bunny as she sprang across the arena. Lead horse, Sundae was in heat, challenging me mentally and physically to keep her on task. In spite of all that was going on she always managed to hit her ending. Dakota, my dominate gelding does what he does best, run. His beauty and movement expresses the true spirit of the horse and is always a hit. I felt like I was running out of energy and prepared myself for defeat, knowing that our last trick was not likely going to happen. But, my team pulled together and wowed the crowd as they all three stood on the pedestal, making all the sweat and hard work worth the effort.
The night wasn’t without flaws, lessons learned so we do better next time but, non the less a success. The event netted $1,051.00 for our charity, the United Cerebral Palsy of Delaware/ Camp Lenape and a great time was had by all. I think my friend MaryAnn best summed it up in an e-mail “The accolades do belong to the ones in the arena who know the sweat and work of the day. Weather we know the thrill of the winning or the disappointment of defeat, it is he who dares valiantly that succeeds for trying. It is easy to sit on the sidelines and comment on where the strong man stumbled”. I still dream of dancing horses.

Easter Greetings At Ronald MacDonald’s House

Saturday, April 18th, 2009

members of the FirstState Corvette Club with patient, Jewell Cox.Jowana Lamb with Catilyn Lewullis of Effort, PA.   The First State Corvette Club returned to the Ronald MacDonald House at the A.I. DuPont Children’s Hospital in Wilmington, Delaware for a visit. The group prepared breakfast for the house guests and I got to visit with all the families.  With it being Easter weekend the club donated bunnies to be given to all the children. As usual, I had a few more goodies of my own which included hats with cool colored flames and little race car action figures.  Some of the stories I heard are heartbreaking. We are lucky to have hospitals such as this one, with many dedicated staff. Unlike our visit in October, this time there was a full house. Fortunately, many of the children were preparing to go home. I look forward to my next visit and next time, at their request, I will have a better selection of hats for the girls.

To The Rescue!

Sunday, April 12th, 2009

It’s a known fact that people who have pets live happier lives.  With the suffering economy more and more pet owners struggle to care and feed their pets which often leads to neglect or giving them up. This has resulted in an increase in the number of animals being dropped off to shelters and horse rescues are over flowing with horses no longer wanted, many neglecting hoof, dental and basic care.

I would like to take a moment to thank all of those people who put in their time, money and heart into saving these animals and finding them homes.  Over the past few weeks I have met several people  personally and through e-mail who have shelters and rescues.  These organizations depend on the community to help support their financial needs and I hope if you are able, in any way, you will find some way to be part of their success.

At the Reading Horse & Pet Expo in PA., I met Pax Vlietstra of the Pike County Humane Society in Milford, Pa., I also spoke with someone at the booth for Last Chance Ranch Horse Rescue. T.D. Cats of the World, a rescue for exotic felines and wildlife brought three baby tigers. They were just beautiful. They have an educational program and are open to the public.  Several organizations have contacted me through e-mail and are certainly worth mentioning, Paws and Claws Animal Shelter of Aurora, NY, Hearts on Noses, a mini pig sanctuary in British Columbia, Canada and Gallastar Equine Center who also uses pigs in their equine assisted  psychotherapy for children and young adults with behavioral and emotional difficulties. I also read about Rainhill Equine Facility, a beautiful rescue in Kentucky. Check out their web-sites!

Thank you visiting! Sorry our comment box is full on this post.

While traveling this journey called life, one never knows where it will lead. After three years of teaching  horse behavior  and liberty I knew I needed something new to offer to camp programs. Fortunately, my family has had a pretty adventurous life so, inspiration isn’t hard to find. My daughter, Jenna is a circus artist and after watching her show I thought what a great idea, I’ll do a circus using my horses and so was born, Le Cirque of Horses.

Jenna’s circus adventure started when she was in high school and she took an interest in a show called “Circus Smirkus”. This was a reality type program documenting the life of children who were part of this circus program based in Vermont. During the summer troupers travel and put on a circus, all the participants are children under the age of 18. When my daughter came to me and told me she wanted to audition for a spot at the circus camp I told her to “Go for it!”. This was a world wide search and I figured she really didn’t have a chance in heck of getting a spot.  Boy was I wrong! There were only four openings and she was was getting one of them and it would only cost $1,500.00. That’s a lot of dollars for a week of camp but, I knew it would be an experience of a lifetime so I dipped into her college fund and off she went. She spent one week in Vermont learning from the best in the trade which included people from all parts of the world. Children experience all parts of the circus arts including acrobatics, clowning, stilt walking, trapeez, tight rope, juggling, balancing and unicycle. The camp has very strict rules including diet, no junk food and three minute showers. Many of the costumes are hand made but, I sent several boxes of costumes for them to borrow. When we returned a week later to pick her up I was amazed at the performance the kids did for us and they looked great in the costumes I had sent.  Jenna didn’t put the experience behind her, instead she let it grow and began performing at hospitals and community events.
